recipe | the jambon beurre
A classic sandwich that reminds me of a favorite vacation and elevates a simple lunch. What’s not to love?
Some sandwiches are elaborate – requiring long lists of ingredients and directions to assemble components before you even begin to assemble the sandwich itself. Others are so simple as to barely need instruction or a “recipe” and I find that both have their place in the greatest hits list.
The jambon buerre is one such sandwich – a French staple so popular that nearly 3 million are sold each day in France. The classic combination of a french baguette, thinly sliced ham and a thick spread of butter is simple, delicious and one of my favorite things to grab and eat for a casual lunch in Paris. On our recent trip there this winter, we had an exceptionally good version from Cortado, a Spanish coffee shop in the 3rd Arrondissement. That particular sandwich was so good we went back multiple times during our short trip, and it has spurred several “…you know what I could really go for right now???” conversations on days we can’t decide what to eat for lunch.
It’s so simple as to be obvious, but sometimes you just need a reminder that there are alternatives to PB&J that are just as easy.
If you’d like to elevate your casual lunch menu, this one’s for you.
