- I really liked the premise of the sober influencers article but thought it ended way too soon — I wanted more!
- Our reading lists are really overlapping. I read and also really enjoyed Will of the Many. And I know Liars was polarizing but I liked it too! Will be curious to hear what you think of Bad Sisters…
I completely agree! I see echoes of the 2016-2019 health, food and fitness /wellness influencers who later admitted eating disorders and orthorexia in some of the sober influencer content, and was wishing the article would get into how some of this has played out on the internet and culture before.
Also yes! I can see why Liars would be polarizing, but I think that's why I appreciated it so much: there were things that resonated and things that didn't, but I could feel the pain of the the experience in the writing which is such a skill (even if the themes and lessons made me little queasy!). I have heard such mixed things about bad sisters, so really excited to actually jump into it!
So appreciated your reflection on the need for writer friends! (and the slightly difficult realization that I don't have any!) Certainly a worthy target for 2025.
I’m so glad to hear you’re over the hump of pneumonia. That sounds quite harrowing.
I’ve got the sober influencer and exercise gender gap articles saved now. TY for linking
Regarding writer friends, if you’re interested, myself and a few other writers here on Substack host a virtual cowriting session once/month-ish. If you’re interested, or anyone else reading this, just DM me and I can send the info. We connect for a bit and then use the pomodoro method to write for 3 sprints. It’s magical what can be created during these sessions and I’ve made a lot of genuine friends through it. (I will admit it’s probably not the greatest time for you, the evening shuffle and toddler bedtime situation—6p PST, but if you ever can make it work, we are there.)
It was such an unexpected illness, and I'm glad I'm finally starting to feel like myself again! Will be interested to hear what you think about the sober influencer article -- as Aja said above, I thought it was super interesting but wished it dug a little deeper!
Also, yes that sounds amazing! 6 pm PST is a tough time with dinner and bed time, but please keep me in mind and I'll see if I can plan ahead! Would love to join.
Maggie- re: writing community. let me know if you'd ever like to meet up to write together- I'm in Ballard, and get together with some other writers in QA/Mag as well. You're welcome anytime! xx
Wow so many thoughts!
