I didn’t have a Sunday edition planned for this week – what with house guests, the holiday weekend, our sixth (6th!!!!) annual friends, dogs and babies camping trip up to the North Cascades, and (yet another) several weeks of kid illnesses to keep me on my toes. But the stars aligned, kids cooperated with naps, and here we are!

Our 4th of July camping trip, borne out of some cabin fever during COVID and a college friend with a free weekend to bum out to Seattle, has turned into one of my favorite annual traditions. Every year we bring a truthfully strange assortment of people - a roommate from college, a friend from high school, friends-we-know-from-other-friends who are always down for an adventure, my sister, our two young kids, and a gaggle of dogs. People come when they can, don’t when they can’t.

Over the years we’ve done a hardcore backcountry backpacking with 30+ mile weekends, slept above the clouds while I was 5 months pregnant, done a multi-segment backpacking trip with a 6 month old, camped in the enchantments with an 18 month old, aaaaaand a leisurely car camp in the San Juan Islands with a few casual beach walks.
