the best of july, including a dark new procedural thriller, my favorite read of the year, seasonal produce recipes on repeat, and a peek at my open tabs.
agree the body keeps the score ep was a standout -- so many horrifying methodological and ethical errors and I had NO IDEA. I mostly can't believe the cam girls thing happened in seattle and I'm baffled I didn't hear about it!!!
Wait, me, talk to me about Lee. I followed her way in early IG days and now every few months she pops up again in some form of pop culture. Sometimes it's her, but many times it's an article about her (often a critical one). What a fascinating decade (more?) it's been for her.
We moved in similar circles in the 2017- LA- health and wellness creator world and I will say she certainly manages to keep herself relevant! my critique now is the same as my critique then was: she has an incredible amount of power and influence, but often chooses to use that influence to push messages that are not grounded in evidence or authority beyond her own experiences and opinions.
I completely agree. I read the article you recommend and totally see that it seems that every 2/3ish years she reinvents herself and is like "this is definitely what it was all about".
The de-influencing influencer era gave me such an ick. Like, just own it? I think after the mug/class debacle she got embarrassed and couldn't handle the public scrutiny.
Also what? She has a fitness program? That she claims works because of her own physical appearance? We've come full circle I feel.
I truly say this not to be a hater, just a confused ex follower.
I have a lot of empathy for someone trying to figure their life out while also documenting it publicly in real time. Speaking from experience, it can be extremely challenging! I also know (from experience, although on a much smaller scale) the gravity of having a following and being able to say “I’m not an expert on this” or “maybe I’m not ready to share about this yet” or (most importantly imo) “I have a responsibility to the people who follow me to understand when my behavior or my recommendations could cause them harm” and after following her for years it’s disappointing she is still unwilling or unable to do that.
Yes, thank you for putting this perspective into words so eloquently. I think we (her audience) can give her grace AND ALSO hold her responsible for what she's putting out into the world.
I had the same thoughts after reading that Link in Bio post! To enjoy the internet better (and not have everything feel like an ad), I won't watch or read something if I don't know the account first (or I'll take a look at the profile first to make sure it's a real person who isn't just posting ads). It also helps me stay away from any infinite scrolling. Except for recipes, lol, when I look those up on YouTube or blogs
that is such a healthy approach! I struggle SO MUCH with the algorithmic "for you" style feeds, espeically on threads or even substack honestly, where I'll start reading something and 2 or 3 posts in the thread in I start getting the uncanny valley tinge where I"m like "I know this is engagement / rage/ some other kind of bait but now I'm interested". Honestly it's making me bring back my very strict app time limits which is definitely for the better, if a little disappointing.
I loved that The Body Keeps the Score podcast ep! And that story about the simps and the cam girls was bananas!!!

Loved this one as always! Would love to meet up before the Emily lecture!
I’m a local Seattle girlie and also just bought tickets to the Emily lecture! Would love to do a meetup!
amazing! let me see how my schedule is settling and will send something in the earlybird chat!
